Chemeketa Online will be upgrading our current version of eLearn from CE 8 to the new Blackboard 9.1 system. This upgrade will provide our faculty with more options in how to present course material and learning activities in online, hybrid, and web-enhanced classes, and it will provide our students with richer learning experiences.
We currently have over 500 faculty members using the eLearn system. An upgrade of this magnitude takes careful planning and time. In an effort to include faculty members in this complex planning process, we are seeking your response regarding when you would like to start teaching on the new Blackboard 9.1 system.
Upgrade Approach and Transition Timeline
The transition from the current system to 9.1 will occur over four phases or terms: winter, spring, summer, and fall 2012. During this time, we will operate dual eLearn systems. Our approach will be to help transition online and hybrid instructors from the current to the new system first, and then later support the transition for instructors using eLearn only as a supplement or web-enhancement to their face-to-face classes.
We will transition on an instructor-by-instructor, not on a class-by-class, basis. We will migrate (copy) all of your classes for you one term prior to the term when you want to begin teaching on the new system. This will allow you time to access any support you may need in order to prep the following term’s classes for your students.
Your Response Requested
We would like to know your preference for the first term you want to teach on the new system. We know there are many factors that impact your decision and we are offering winter, spring, summer, and fall 2012 as options for you to transition to teaching on the new 9.1 system. During this one-year period, we will be operating dual eLearn systems; however, please note that once your courses have been migrated you will only teach in the new system.
Considerations for choosing your first term on the new system
When an instructor moves from the current system to the new system, we will migrate (copy) all of that instructor’s classes from the current system to the new system. Then instructors will need to prep the courses they are planning to teach the following term/s.
As you make your decision about when to begin teaching on Blackboard 9.1, consider:
- Your personal schedule, including sabbaticals and other planned absences
- Your anticipated teaching schedule
- Program needs and preferences
- Upcoming changes in textbooks, materials or course outlines
We will move your course content from the current system to the new system for you, one term prior to your first term on the new system. A full range of support resources will be available, including:
- Online and face-to-face upgrade workshops
- Open working sessions
- Online tutorials and guides
- 24 x 7 help desk with email, chat, phone help, as well as a searchable online knowledge base
