Chemeketa Online has completed testing of Service Pack 11, an upgrade to our eLearn system that will be installed over Spring Break.
The eLearn system update is scheduled to start on March 25th, 2012 at 5:00 pm PDT. It should complete on or before 11:00 am PDT on Tuesday, March 26th. During this time, the eLearn system will be unavailable.
Service Pack Highlights
Service Pack 11 consists primarily of repairs and fixes, as is typical of odd-numbered service pack updates. However, it includes at least three feature enhancements that you will notice immediately:
Discussion Board Improvements:
In the past, it was necessary to click individually on each post in a discussion thread to view its contents. In SP 11, you will notice that when you open a thread, all the messages within that thread display at once. Slight indents reflect the nested structure of the thread. Discussion board users will notice a significant improvement in functionality. A Post First option has also been added, which requires the student to post to the forum before they are able to see posts of other students.
In-line Assignment Grading:
Currently, when students submit attached assignments the instructor must download, open, markup, save as, and reattach the attachment so it can be viewed by students. In SP11, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files open in the browser as soon as the assignment is opened. A full range of annotation tools is provided including comments, highlighting, textbox and drawing tools. Furthermore, the grading sidebar is available in the same window. This should be a significant workflow enhancement for instructors using the Assignment tool.
Video Everywhere feature:
A new button has been added to the HTML editor to enable instructors to record and insert webcam video on the fly into any place the HTML editor is available. eLearn automatically uploads the video to a YouTube account that you specify and places a thumbnail in the document. We will add a tutorial to the Tech Hub website (http://techhub.chemeketa.edu) describing the use of Video Everywhere as well as relevant FERPA considerations.
Top Resolved Issues:
Below is a list of top resolved issues to the current eLearn system.
- Direct links can be included in a message or email.
- You Tube videos are no longer blocked due to browser security settings
