Blackboard Learn 9.1 Service Pack 13 Update
Chemeketa Online has completed testing of Service Packs 12 and 13, upgrades to our eLearn system that will be installed before Fall Term.
The eLearn system update is scheduled to start on September 6th, 2013 at 9:00 pm PDT. It should complete by 3:30 pm PDT on Saturday, September 7th. During this time, the eLearn system will be unavailable.
Service Pack Highlights
These Service Packs contain new features as well as repairs and fixes. The following list highlights the features that most users will appreciate:
Calendar Improvements – New & Improved Features for All Users
The calendar has been completely rebuilt, giving users a much more modern tool. Users can select views (month, week, day) and color-code the events to differentiate courses and personal items. Items with due dates automatically appear on the new Blackboard Learn calendar. If an instructor changes a due date, the calendar gets updated as well. On the flip side, moving a calendar item (by clicking on the item or drag and drop) simultaneously changes a due date for an instructor. Users can also create recurring events by selecting the “repeat” checkbox.
Retention Center – Identify Struggling Students at a Glance
The Retention Center will flag at-risk students based on deadlines missed, a grade column, level of activity, time since last access, or a combination of these. Identification rules are fully customizable. Particular students can be placed on a “watch list.” Students experiencing difficulty can be emailed directly from the Retention Center; the message box is prefilled with an (optional) message that the instructor can use if s/he wants. The Retention Center alerts the instructor to ungraded tests, assignments, discussions, etc. which is helpful because a student who is flagged may just need to have some work scored to be in the clear again.
In-line Assignment Grading – Streamlined Feedback on Attached Assignments
In SP13, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files open in the browser as soon as the assignment is opened. A full range of annotation tools is provided including comments, highlighting, textbox and drawing tools. Furthermore, the grading sidebar is available in the same window. This should be a significant workflow enhancement for instructors using the Assignment tool. Instructors will still have the option to download, open, markup, save as, and reattach the attachment for students to view, as before. NOTE: In-line grading does not work with SafeAssign, and does not allow for the use of annotation markup tools on student work which is submitted in the content editor.
Mashups – New Media Tools
The Mashups tool in eLearn allows instructors to easily discover instructional video content and embed directly within their courses. Two new mashups have been added for adding content from INTELECOM and KALTURA, the new Chemeketa Learning Cloud streaming media server. Links for these Mashups can be found under the Build Content menu in eLearn.
Video Everywhere – Add Video Almost Anywhere
A new button has been added to the HTML editor to enable instructors to record and insert webcam video on the fly into any place the HTML editor is available. eLearn automatically uploads the video to a YouTube account that you specify and places a thumbnail in the document. Look for a tutorial to be added to the Tech Hub website (http://techhub.chemeketa.edu) describing the use of Video Everywhere as well as relevant FERPA considerations.
Student View – Now, an Authentic Student View
You’ll now notice a new Student View button the upper right-hand corner of your eLearn course. This allows you to quickly see a true student view of your course, without having to enroll a test student. Once you click the Student View button, a “demo-student” record is created in the grade center area so that you can also test grading features.
Test Access Log – The test did what?!
The Test Access Log lets instructors see the exact time a student started a test, when they submitted each question, and when they submitted the test. The log may prove useful in corroborating student reports of testing anomalies, and is available when viewing a test attempt.
